How to Specify a Fixed Negative Voltage Regulator for Your Circuit
Most negative-rail problems are specification problems, not component problems. Here is the three-step method our application engineers use when a customer sends a schematic.
Step 1 — Match the Topology to the Load
A fixed negative voltage regulator holds a constant output below ground potential. The three families you will see in a real BOM are:
Three-terminal bipolar (79xx-type): the workhorse for −5 V to −24 V at up to 1.5 A. Requires a minimum load and 1.1 V of headroom. Best cost-per-watt for analog stages.
Negative LDO: pick this when your negative input is close to the output, e.g. −5.5 V in, −5 V out. Dropout drops to 0.35–0.5 V, but watch the quiescent current.
Charge-pump inverter + regulator: for sub-100 mA rails off a positive supply only. Useful in compact sensor nodes, less efficient above 200 mA.
Rule of thumb: if your load exceeds 500 mA and the input is more than 3 V below the target, stay bipolar. If headroom is under 1.5 V, go LDO.
Step 2 — Calculate Thermal Headroom Before You Choose the Package
Power dissipation is simply PD = (VIN − VOUT) × IOUT. For a −24 V input feeding a −15 V rail at 1 A, that is 9 W — enough to destroy a bare TO-220 in minutes.
Worked example
PD = 9 W. TO-220 junction-to-ambient ≈ 65 °C/W bare. At 40 °C ambient, junction temperature hits 625 °C — far past the 150 °C shutdown point. Add a heatsink of 2.5 °C/W and the junction settles near 68 °C. Safe. Alternatively, split the drop across a series resistor or move to a switching pre-regulator.

Step 3 — Protect the Rail: Capacitors, Diodes, and Layout
Input bypass: 0.33 µF ceramic within 5 mm of the input pin. Prevents oscillation on long supply leads.
Output bypass: 1 µF to 10 µF tantalum or ceramic. Improves transient response and lowers output noise.
Reverse-bias protection: a diode from output to ground protects the regulator if the negative rail collapses before the input. Cheap insurance against a $200 board failure.
Ground return: keep the negative rail return separate from analog ground until a single star point. This alone fixes most hum and offset complaints.
